How much traffic do you need to make money from ads?

The answer comes from flipping the RPM formula around. If you know roughly what you will earn per 1,000 pageviews, you can work out the traffic needed for any income goal:

Pageviews needed per month = monthly income goal ÷ page RPM × 1,000

At a $10 page RPM, $1,000 a month takes 100,000 pageviews. At a $20 RPM it takes 50,000. That is why niche, visitor location and ad network matter as much as raw traffic: they decide the RPM you divide by.

Traffic needed for common income goals

Monthly pageviews needed for a general-topic site with a mostly US audience (typical estimate):

Monthly goalOn AdSense (~$5.66 RPM)On Raptive (~$9.84 RPM)
$50088,00051,000
$1,000177,000102,000
$3,000530,000305,000
$5,000883,000508,000
$10,0001,767,0001,016,000

A finance or business site could need half as much traffic; an entertainment or gaming site could need twice as much or more. Change the niche in the calculator to see your own numbers.

From pageviews to daily visitors

Analytics tools count traffic in different ways. To turn a monthly pageview target into something you can track each day:

Sessions per month = pageviews ÷ pages per session
Visitors per day ≈ sessions per month ÷ 30.4

With 1.5 pages per session, 100,000 monthly pageviews is about 66,700 sessions, or roughly 2,200 visits a day. Improving internal links so readers view more pages lowers the number of visitors you need.

Why you may need less traffic than you think

  • Upgrade your network. The same goal can take far fewer pageviews on a premium network than on AdSense.
  • Target high-value readers. One US visitor can be worth as much as five to ten visitors from lower-paying regions.
  • Pick commercial topics. Articles that attract buyers, such as reviews, comparisons and how-to guides for paid products, earn higher RPMs.
  • Add a second income stream. Affiliate links, sponsored posts or your own products can make up the difference while traffic grows.

Be realistic about timelines

Growing a content site to six-figure monthly pageviews usually takes one to two years of consistent publishing, and search algorithm updates can set progress back. Use the revenue growth projection to see how long your goal might take at different growth rates, and remember that RPMs are lowest in January and highest in December.

Frequently asked questions

How much traffic do I need to make $1,000 a month from ads?
At a page RPM of $10, you need 100,000 pageviews a month. With mostly US traffic, that is a realistic premium-network RPM for many niches; on AdSense you may need roughly twice the traffic. Use the calculator for your niche.
How many daily visitors do I need to make $100 a day?
About $3,000 a month. At a page RPM of $15 and 1.5 pages per visit, that is roughly 200,000 pageviews, or about 4,400 visitors a day.
Why do I need less traffic on Mediavine or Raptive?
Premium networks earn more per 1,000 pageviews, so the same income takes fewer pageviews. Their requirements, though, mean you usually need some traffic before you can join.
Does traffic location matter more than volume?
Often, yes. A visitor from the United States can be worth five to ten times as much as a visitor from India or Southeast Asia, so 50,000 US pageviews can out-earn 200,000 pageviews from lower-value regions.
How long does it take to reach that traffic?
It varies widely with niche competition and publishing pace. Many new content sites take 12 to 24 months to reach six-figure monthly pageviews. The Revenue Growth Projection tool shows how quickly a given growth rate gets you there.
