Website Traffic & Ad Revenue Growth Projection

Project your traffic and ad income for the next one to three years. The projection includes seasonal RPM swings and can switch you to a better ad network as soon as you qualify for it.

    How the projection works

The projection grows your traffic by a fixed percentage each month, works out the page RPM you would earn on your ad network in that calendar month, and adds the results up. Three things make it more realistic than a simple spreadsheet:

    1. Compound growth. 8% a month does not mean 96% a year. Compounded, it is about 2.5 times your traffic after 12 months.
    2. Seasonality. Ad prices change through the year, so the same traffic earns less in January than in December.
    3. Network upgrades. Each month the projection checks the published requirements of the networks you ticked, and switches to the best one you qualify for.

    Seasonal RPM pattern

These monthly factors (1.00 = the annual average) are applied to every projection. They reflect the typical pattern publishers report: a sharp drop when advertisers reset budgets in January, and a strong rise through the holiday season.

A dip in January is normal and not a sign that something is wrong with your site. Compare each month with the same month last year rather than with the month before.

    Choosing a realistic growth rate

Monthly growthAfter 12 monthsAfter 24 monthsTypical for
    2%×1.3×1.6Mature sites holding steady
    5%×1.8×3.2Established sites still publishing
    10%×3.1×9.8Young sites publishing regularly
20%×8.9×79.5Very new sites from a small base

High growth rates rarely last. A site that doubles from 1,000 to 2,000 pageviews in a month is unlikely to double again from 100,000 to 200,000. Run the projection with a cautious and an optimistic rate to see the range of outcomes, and treat anything beyond 12 months as a scenario rather than a forecast.

    Milestones to watch

For most growing sites the biggest jumps in income come from changing networks, not from traffic alone:

    • Journey by Mediavine becomes available at 1,000 sessions a month from the US, Canada, UK and Australia.
    • Raptive at 25,000 monthly pageviews, once the domain is at least 6 months old and at least half the traffic is from tier-1 countries.
    • Mediavine once the site earns $5,000 a year in ad revenue. The projection checks this against your running earnings rate each month.

The milestone list shows the first month you are projected to meet each network's published requirements, and the month-by-month table highlights each switch.

    Frequently asked questions

Why do ad earnings drop in January?
Advertisers spend heavily in the fourth quarter for the holidays, then budgets reset in January. RPMs commonly fall 20–30% below the annual average in Q1 and rise 20–50% above it in Q4.
What is a realistic monthly traffic growth rate?
It varies hugely. A new site that publishes regularly might grow 10–20% a month from a small base, while an established site is doing well at 2–5% a month. Search algorithm updates can also cause sudden drops or jumps.
When should I switch ad networks?
As soon as you qualify for a network with a meaningfully higher RPM, as long as it suits your niche and audience. The projection marks the first month you meet each network's published requirements.
Does the projection account for Mediavine's revenue requirement?
Yes. It checks your projected annual ad revenue run rate against Mediavine's $5,000 minimum each month.
How accurate is a 3-year projection?
Treat anything past 12 months as a scenario, not a forecast. Change the growth rate to see a cautious and an optimistic case.
